Rocker is the curve of the board from tip to tail, and it decides how the board leaves the water. Continuous rocker gives a smooth, fast, predictable ride. Three stage rocker gives a sharper, more vertical pop and a harder landing. Hybrid rocker sits between the two and is what most modern all round boards use.
If you want the short answer: most Australian riders should be on continuous or hybrid rocker. Three stage is for riders who already have their edge control and are chasing height.
What are the three rocker profiles?

How much rocker is a lot?
Rocker is measured in inches or millimetres as the height of the tip above a flat surface when the board sits on its base. Manufacturers publish it on the spec sheet.

Do not shop on this number alone. Two boards with identical rocker measurements can ride completely differently depending on where the curve sits and how the board flexes.
What does continuous rocker actually do?
Continuous rocker keeps a constant curve, so the board never has a flat spot sitting against the water. That gives you three things:
- Speed. The board planes easily and holds its speed through a turn, so it takes less effort to keep going.
- Predictable pop. You get launched forward and up along the arc rather than straight up. It feels smooth rather than sudden.
- Soft landings. The curve absorbs the landing instead of slapping flat, which your knees notice by the third set of the day.
The trade off is height. You will not get the vertical lift a three stage board gives off the same wake.

What does three stage rocker actually do?
Three stage rocker has a flat section under your feet with a distinct kick at each end. The flat section loads up against the wake and then releases all at once.
- Big vertical pop. The board sends you up rather than out. This is why park and competition riders like it.
- Slower through the water. The flat section drags. You need more boat speed or a harder edge to hold the same pace.
- Harder landings. A flat centre lands flat. It is loud and it is felt.
It is a specialist choice. On a small wake behind a stock family boat, a three stage board mostly just feels slow, because there is not enough wake to load it against.

What is hybrid rocker?
Hybrid rocker blends the two: a mostly continuous curve with a subtle kick towards the tip and tail. It is a marketing term as much as a design term, and every brand means something slightly different by it.
In practice a hybrid board gives you most of the speed and forgiveness of continuous with a bit more kick off the wake. If you are buying one board to do everything, this is usually where you land, and it is what most all round boards on the market are.

Which rocker should I buy?
Work through these in order.
Buy continuous if:
- You are learning, or you have been off the water for a while
- You ride behind a boat without much ballast, or a wake that is on the small side
- You ride long sessions and want soft landings
- You mostly carve and cruise rather than chase tricks
Buy hybrid if:
- You want one board that handles everything reasonably well
- You are progressing past the basics but still want a forgiving board
- You are not sure. This is the safe default.
Buy three stage if:
- Your edge control is already solid and consistent
- You ride behind a properly weighted wake boat
- Height is what you are chasing, and you accept the harder landings
Does rocker change between boat and cable boards?
Yes. Cable boards generally run more rocker and a softer flex, because you need the tip and tail to lift over features and you need the board to press rather than resist. Boat boards run flatter and stiffer so they hold an edge against the boat's pull.
That is one of several reasons a boat board and a cable board are not interchangeable.
Does rocker change what size board I need?
No. Size by rider weight first, then pick the rocker within that length.
The only nuance is that a high rocker board sits slightly deeper at rest than a flat board of the same length, so a heavy rider right at the bottom of a length range will feel that. If you are on the borderline, go up a size.

Is more rocker better? No. More rocker gives more pop and less speed. Neither one is better, they suit different riding.
Can a beginner ride a three stage board? Yes, but they will progress more slowly. The board is less forgiving of a bad edge and it punishes a flat landing.
Does rocker wear out? No, but a board can lose its shape if it is stored under weight or left in a hot car. Store it flat, out of the sun.
Which rocker gives softer landings? Continuous, clearly. If your knees or back are the limiting factor, that is your answer.
