There are three wakesurf board styles: surf, skim and hybrid. Surf style boards are bigger, more stable and easier to learn on. Skim style boards are smaller and flatter, and they spin and slide. Hybrids sit between the two.
If you are buying your first wakesurfer, buy a surf style board in the right size for your weight. Almost everyone starts there, and plenty of people never leave.
Skim, surf or hybrid: what is the difference?

Surf style behaves like a small surfboard. The volume and the fins mean it drives forward and holds its position in the pocket, so you can let go of the rope sooner and stay there longer.
Skim style behaves like a skimboard. Very little fin, very little rocker, so it breaks loose easily and spins with almost no effort. That same looseness is why it is a hard board to learn on: it will slide out from under a rider who has not yet learned to weight it properly.
Hybrid boards take a surf outline with a thinner profile and smaller fins. If you already surf the wake confidently and you want to start spinning without losing all your drive, this is the crossover.
What size wakesurf board do I need?
Wakesurf boards are sized by rider weight, and unlike wakeboards the size ranges are much less forgiving, because the board has to float you at slow speed.

Three things shift you within that:
- Go bigger if you are learning, if your boat's wake is on the small side, or if the board gets shared with someone heavier.
- Go smaller only once you can stay in the pocket ropeless and you want the board to be looser.
- Skim boards run shorter than surf boards for the same rider, because they are ridden differently. Follow the individual board's chart, not a length rule.
Volume matters as much as length. A short, thick board can float a heavier rider than a long, thin one. Where a brand publishes volume in litres, use it.
What fin setup should I run?
Most wakesurfers ship with fins and a fin key, and most let you change the configuration. Start with what the board comes with, then experiment.

Rule of thumb: bigger fins mean more drive and less slide. If the board feels like it washes out on your turns, go bigger. If it feels stuck and you cannot break the tail loose, go smaller.
Do I need a special boat to wakesurf?
Effectively, yes. Wakesurfing needs an inboard boat, one where the propeller sits under the hull. Never wakesurf behind an outboard or a sterndrive, because the rider is close enough to the transom that an exposed prop is a serious injury risk.
Beyond that you need weight and speed:

A wake shaping device makes a huge difference on boats without a dedicated surf system, and it is the single cheapest upgrade to a marginal wave.
Wakesurfing vs wakeboarding: what actually changes?

The low speed is why wakesurfing has spread so quickly with older riders and with families. It is far gentler on knees, backs and shoulders than wakeboarding.
What else do I need?
- A lifejacket. In NSW anyone being towed by a vessel must wear a Level 50S or above lifejacket, and that explicitly includes wakesurfers. Read the NSW rules
- A wakesurf rope. Shorter and thicker than a wakeboard rope, with knots or a braided section so the rider can adjust their distance while getting up. A wakeboard rope is the wrong tool.
- A board bag if it lives on a roof rack or in a hot car. Heat delaminates a wakesurfer faster than riding does.
Quick answers
Can I use a surfboard instead? No. A real surfboard is too big, too buoyant and has fins and a leash plug that make it dangerous behind a boat.
Can a beginner ride a skim board? They can, but it will take a lot longer. Learn on a surf style board first.
Do I size a wakesurf board like a wakeboard? No. Both go by rider weight, but the charts are completely different and a wakeboard chart will put you on the wrong board.
How long do wakesurfers last? Compression construction boards last many seasons if they are kept out of the sun. The most common cause of death is heat, not riding.
Can two people share one wakesurfer? Yes, more easily than a wakeboard, since there are no bindings. Size for the heavier rider.
